## A beach held by stone
Commercial Street bends around a small beach in Lerwick, following the edge of the water between old stone buildings. The town grew as a trading port from the seventeenth century, and the street still feels closely tied to the sea.

I spent several hours walking here with the recorder. The waves were the obvious voice, but the place changed them: each break rolled up the beach, met the surrounding stonework and returned as a dense, enveloping wash. The buildings did not merely frame the scene; they became part of its acoustics.
The beach may look familiar from the fabulous television series *Shetland*. Standing there felt more intimate than the screen suggests—a small strip of shore, close walls, cold air and the repeated arrival of water.
## Listening to history
Lerwick's harbour, narrow lanes and stone façades tell one part of Shetland's history. Across the islands, places such as Jarlshof and Mousa Broch reach much further back. Recording on Commercial Street made that long relationship between people, weather and sea feel immediate.
What stayed with me was not a single dramatic event. It was the way the location shaped an everyday natural sound, giving the waves weight, depth and a sense of place.
