The Shetland Islands, located off the north coast of Scotland, are a group of remote and rugged islands steeped in history and rich in natural beauty. During a recent visit to Lerwick, the largest town on the main island, I had the opportunity to explore and record the unique soundscape of this captivating location.
Lerwick is a town with a rich history, dating back to the 17th century when it was established as a bustling trade hub. The town is a fascinating blend of old and new, with traditional stone buildings and narrow winding streets coexisting with modern amenities.
One such street is Commercial Street, which follows the contours of a picturesque beach and is lined with time-worn stone buildings, some of which date back to the 18th century. These structures stand as a testament to the area’s past as a center for fishing and trade, while also providing a sense of continuity and connection to the island’s heritage.
During my walk along Commercial Street, I had the opportunity to record the unique sounds of this historic location. The waves crashing against the shore and the ambient sounds of the area reverberated off the ancient stonework, creating a rich and immersive atmosphere that enveloped anyone who walked along the street. This captivating setting, along with the stunning little beach, has even been featured in the popular ‘Shetland’ TV series.
But the beauty of Lerwick goes beyond its charming streets and picturesque coastline. The town is also home to a rich Viking history, as evidenced by the impressive archaeological sites scattered throughout the area. From the ancient Jarlshof settlement to the Mousa Broch, a remarkably well-preserved Iron Age fortress, the Shetland Islands are a treasure trove of history and heritage.
Exploring and recording the sounds of Commercial Street not only provided a memorable experience but also offered a glimpse into the fascinating history of Lerwick and the Shetland Islands. The allure and charm of this distinctive location serve as a powerful reminder of the island’s storied past and enduring beauty.
